National Disability Insurance Agency – Newcastle City’s Newest Federal Government Tenancy

It is with great pleasure that I announce National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) disability symbolhave taken up tenancy to establish themselves in Newcastle CBD.

In January this year we were approached by government representatives seeking 2,000sqm of office space with good exposure, easy access to the public and with on-site car parking.

The problem was that we had one floor consisting of approx. 1450 sqm but fell short of the balance of space…….that is until we discovered that the neighbouring building that we also had for lease (which consisted of approx 450 sqm of office space), could possibly be joined onto the other building to provide the right amount of floor space needed.

So after many architect, engineer and builder consultations, the green light was given that the two buildings (which have different floor levels and building heights) could be married together and the deal was struck to establish 6-8 &14 Auckland Streets, Newcastle as NDIA headquarters.

A substantial government agency of this size located in the heart of the CBD is a huge win for the city as they not only absorb a lot of vacant space through their own use but it has a flow on effect for the properties that surround with many organisations seeking to co-habitat nearby to NDIA.  The most recent example of this was the NDIA headquarters that opened in 2013 in Lake Macquarie at Charlestown in the ex Rebel Sport building that forms part of Hilltop plaza.  Almost all of the lettable space immediately surrounding this office was taken up by private sector companies and non-profit organisations that feed off Federal Government tenancy.

This tenancy also brings another major destination to the Civic precinct adding to the Newcastle University campus extension and the new law courts; a long overdue boost for the surrounding businesses and property owners.

The NDIA Newcastle office is due to open mid 2015.
