Student Accommodation Newcastle Update

The International student population in Australia is continuing to increase in both universities and other education sectors. Australia is now the third most popular global destination students travelling abroad to study.

International student growth has been strong with applications for student visa’s increasing by 11% between 2015 to 2016.

Of the Australia student population, the top five countries of origin are China with 28% of students opting to travel to Australia to complete their studies, followed by India (11%) South Korea (4%) Thailand (4%) and Vietnam (4%). Statistics also show an increase in student visa applications coming from Brazil, Malaysia, Nepal, Hong Kong and Columbia.

Mecca Powell, Student Accommodation Specialist for Student Shack said “The national trend is being reflected in Newcastle by the increase in enquiry from Chinese, Korean, Thai & Indian students. We are also receiving enquiry from students from Canada and Netherlands. We are currently very busy fielding enquires from students looking to secure a room for the start of the 2018 academic year”. Mecca also commented that another trend that has continued this year is the expectation from students for an ensuite. In her experience, there is always demand for rooms with an ensuite and they do lease faster than rooms without one. Mecca recommends that these extra facilities are factored in to all new developments”.

Student Shack Director Alan Tonks predicted that with continued government cuts to University funding and an increased competition between international students for quality accommodation, the provision for premium, purpose built accommodation will become increasingly important.
